Diego Durán

Diego Durán, born in 1537, was a Dominican friar whose contributions as a historian, writer, and missionary have left a lasting impact on the understanding of Aztec culture. He is best known for his seminal work, The History of the Indies of New Spain, which stands as one of the earliest Western accounts of the history and culture of the Aztecs. Completed around 1581, this book faced significant criticism during Durán's lifetime for its role in preserving what some deemed the 'heathen' culture of the indigenous people.

In addition to his most famous work, Durán authored several other important texts, including the Book of the Gods and Rites between 1574 and 1576, and the Ancient Calendar around 1579. His fluency in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, enabled him to engage directly with native populations, consult ancient codices, and draw upon the works of earlier friars.

Durán's empathetic nature was instrumental in gaining the trust of many indigenous individuals, allowing him to document a wealth of previously unknown folktales and legends. This unique perspective not only enriched his writings but also provided invaluable insights into the cultural heritage of the Aztecs, making his contributions to history both significant and distinctive.
