Dieter Quester

Dieter Quester, born on May 30, 1939, is an esteemed Austrian former racing driver and motorcycle racer whose career has spanned several decades. He began his motorsport journey in the 1950s with motorboats before transitioning to car racing, where he became a notable figure in the Formula 2 team of BMW. His participation in the 1969 German Grand Prix was marked by tragedy when his teammate Gerhard Mitter lost his life during practice, leading to the team's withdrawal from the race.

Quester made his mark in Formula One during the 1974 Austrian Grand Prix, where he out-qualified his Surtees teammates and finished ninth, notably ahead of renowned competitors like Hans-Joachim Stuck and Graham Hill. Although he did not score championship points, this performance solidified his reputation in the racing community.

After his brief stint in Formula One, Quester shifted his focus to the European Touring Car Championship, driving a BMW 3.0 CSL for Schnitzer Motorsport. His prowess was evident as he clinched victory at the 1973 Spa 24 Hours. He continued to compete in the DTM, where he famously slid his BMW M3 across the finish line at the AVUS, showcasing his skill and daring.

Remarkably, Quester remained active in racing well into his seventies, with sponsorship from Red Bull. His achievements included winning the 24 Hours race at the Dubai Autodrome in January two thousand six, alongside notable drivers like Hans-Joachim Stuck. He continued to excel in endurance racing, securing multiple victories at the Britcar 24 Hours of Silverstone and returning to Dubai for another win in January two thousand seven.

Quester's illustrious career culminated in his final race at the HSR Classic Daytona in November two thousand eighteen, at the impressive age of seventy-nine, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and passion for motorsport.
