In nineteen sixty-nine, Lorenz transitioned from SV Dynamo Schleiz to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten, the sports club affiliated with the Volkspolizei. His dedication and skill in judo led him to achieve remarkable success on the international stage, including gold medals at both the European Judo Championships and the World Judo Championships. Notably, he made history as the first German to win at the Olympics and the prestigious Jigoro Kano Cup.
