Dimitar Iliev Popov

Dimitar Iliev Popov, born on June 26, 1927, was a prominent figure in Bulgarian politics and law. He made history as the first prime minister of Bulgaria not affiliated with the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1946, marking a significant shift in the country's political landscape.

Appointed in December 1990 following the resignation of Andrey Lukanov amidst widespread protests and a general strike, Popov was selected for his reputation as an impartial member of the judiciary. His leadership came at a crucial time, as he was tasked with guiding the nation through a transitional period.

During his tenure, Popov played a pivotal role in drafting a new constitution and overseeing the second open elections in Bulgaria. Although his government initiated the policy of privatization, it was primarily viewed as a caretaker administration, focused on stabilizing the country during a time of change.

Dimitar Popov passed away on December 5, 2015, at the age of eighty-eight, leaving behind a legacy as a key player in Bulgaria's journey towards democracy.
