Diogenes of Oenoanda

Diogenes of Oenoanda was a prominent Epicurean philosopher hailing from the ancient Greek city of Oenoanda in Lycia, which is located in modern-day southwest Turkey. Born in the year two hundred AD, he dedicated his life to the teachings of Epicurus, a philosophy that emphasized the pursuit of happiness through the cultivation of friendships, the enjoyment of simple pleasures, and the pursuit of knowledge.

One of Diogenes' most significant contributions to philosophy was his monumental inscription carved onto a portico wall in Oenoanda. This extensive work, originally spanning about eighty meters, served as a comprehensive summary of Epicurean thought. The wall's inscription, written in Greek, meticulously outlined Epicurus' teachings on various subjects, including physics, epistemology, and ethics.

Originally comprising approximately twenty-five thousand words and covering two hundred sixty square meters of wall space, the inscription has become a vital source for understanding Epicurean philosophy. Although less than a third of the original text has survived the ravages of time, the fragments that remain continue to provide invaluable insights into the philosophical landscape of the second century AD.
