Alex Zhang Hungtai, known professionally as Dirty Beaches, is a Taiwanese-born Canadian musician and actor, born on September fourth, nineteen eighty. He has made a significant impact on the music scene with his unique sound, blending elements of no wave, electronic music, jazz, and ambient styles.
Initially, Zhang released several EPs and three albums under the Dirty Beaches moniker on cassette-only labels. His breakthrough came with the release of his fourth full-length album, Badlands, in March twenty eleven. This album marked a departure from his earlier work, showcasing his vocals prominently and earning a long-list nomination for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize.
In twenty thirteen, he followed up with Drifters/Love Is The Devil, further exploring his eclectic musical influences. However, in twenty fourteen, Zhang decided to conclude the Dirty Beaches project with the release of Stateless, an instrumental album that featured his saxophone skills.
Transitioning to the name Last Lizard, he collaborated with various jazz and improvisational musicians, sharing new solo pieces on platforms like SoundCloud, Vimeo, and Vine. In twenty sixteen, he released the instrumental piano album Knave of Hearts under his own name, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
Beyond his music, Zhang Hungtai has also made his mark in film, composing original soundtracks for several films and documentaries, including Water Park in twenty twelve, Who Is Arthur Chu? in twenty seventeen, and Godland in twenty twenty-two. He has also directed music videos for both himself and other artists, further demonstrating his creative range.
