Clive Campbell, born on April 16, 1955, is widely recognized as DJ Kool Herc, a pioneering figure in the world of hip-hop music. His journey began in the Bronx, New York City, where he laid the groundwork for a genre that would transform the music landscape. In 1973, he emerged as a trailblazer, earning the title of the Father of Hip-Hop for his innovative approach to DJing.

DJ Kool Herc's unique style involved playing hard funk records, particularly those by James Brown, and isolating the instrumental breaks to highlight the powerful drum beats. This technique, known as breakbeat DJing, allowed him to extend the breaks by using two copies of the same record on a two-turntable setup, creating an electrifying atmosphere that captivated dancers.

His influence extended beyond music; he coined the terms 'break-boys' and 'break-girls,' which evolved into the iconic labels b-boys and b-girls, still prevalent in the culture of breaking today.
