Djemal Pasha

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Djemal Pasha

Djemal Pasha, born on May sixth, eighteen seventy-two, was a prominent Ottoman general and statesman. He played a significant role in the governance of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, alongside notable figures Talaat and Enver, collectively known as the Three Pashas. His military career began in the II Corps, where he was stationed in Salonica, developing political ties with the Committee of Union and Progress, a secret reformist organization.

Initially, Djemal garnered praise from Christian missionaries for his support of Armenian victims during the Adana massacres. However, his career was marked by a rivalry with Mustafa Kemal, who would later become known as Atatürk. Djemal served on the frontlines during the Balkan Wars and was appointed to command Constantinople following the Raid on the Sublime Porte.

His authoritarian rule in Syria lasted three years, during which he faced significant opposition from the local population due to his promotion of Turkish nationalism. Djemal's involvement in the Armenian genocide remains a contentious topic; while his policies were less lethal than those of other CUP leaders, he advocated for the forced assimilation of Armenians.

After the Armistice of Mudros and the subsequent collapse of the CUP government in nineteen eighteen, Djemal fled the Ottoman Empire. He was sentenced to death in absentia by a Special Military Tribunal. Four years later, he met his end in Tbilisi, assassinated by members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.
