Dmitri Volkogonov

Dmitri Volkogonov, born on March twenty-second, nineteen twenty-eight, was a prominent Soviet and Russian historian, military personnel, and politician. He served as a colonel general and was notably the head of the Soviet military's psychological warfare department. His career was marked by a deep commitment to Stalinism and Marxist–Leninist ideology, which he adhered to for the majority of his life.

Volkogonov's scholarly pursuits led him to delve into the secret archives of the Soviet Central Committee, both prior to and following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. His groundbreaking research unveiled truths that challenged the official narratives surrounding key figures such as Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin. This work culminated in the publication of several biographies, including those of Leon Trotsky, which contributed significantly to the liberal Russian thought that emerged during the Glasnost period in the late nineteen eighties and the early post-Soviet era.

In the spring of nineteen ninety-two, Volkogonov was appointed by President Boris Yeltsin to lead a commission tasked with establishing the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. His insights and findings played a crucial role in shaping the understanding of Soviet history and the legacy of its leaders.

Despite his earlier allegiance to communist ideals, Volkogonov experienced a profound transformation in his beliefs during the last decade of his life, ultimately repudiating communism and the Soviet system. He passed away from cancer in nineteen ninety-five, leaving behind a complex legacy as a historian who dared to confront the myths of the past.
