Dmytro Dontsov

Dmytro Dontsov, born on August twenty-ninth, eighteen eighty-three, was a prominent Ukrainian nationalist writer and journalist whose influence shaped the radical wing of the Ukrainian nationalist movement during the 1920s. As a literary critic and philosopher, he developed a unique brand of radical Ukrainian nationalism that left a lasting impact on the political landscape of Ukraine.

Dontsov was a fervent advocate for the separation of Ukraine from Russia, promoting a reorientation towards the West. He introduced the concept of 'active nationalism' (chynnyi natsionalizm), which emphasized the role of an 'initiative minority' inspired by the ideologies of Italian fascism and Bolshevism. His writings and ideas resonated deeply within the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, particularly influencing the Banderite generation.

In the 1930s, Dontsov's ideological stance shifted as he became increasingly influenced by fascism and Nazism, leading him to republish works by various fascist politicians and ideologues. Despite his significant contributions to Ukrainian nationalism, his ethnic nationalism faced rejection from the Ukrainian intelligentsia in the postwar years.

Nevertheless, Dmytro Dontsov remains a figure of considerable regard among the Ukrainian far-right, symbolizing a complex legacy that intertwines nationalism with controversial ideological influences.
