Dniprova Chayka

Dniprova Chayka, born Liudmyla Berezyna on October 20, 1861, in Karlivka, Ukraine, was a prominent Ukrainian educator and writer. The daughter of a Russian village priest and a Ukrainian mother, she received her education at a private gymnasium in Odessa. Her early career included working as a private tutor and teaching in both village and high schools, where she dedicated herself to compiling Ukrainian folk songs and preserving oral traditions.

In 1885, she married Teofan Vasylevsky, a Ukrainian historian and patriot. Their marriage was marked by the challenges of living under the oppressive regime of the Russian Empire, which often subjected them to police surveillance due to their nationalist sentiments. In 1905, the couple faced a significant setback when Vasylevska's writings were confiscated, highlighting the risks associated with their advocacy for Ukrainian culture.

Vasylevska's literary contributions began with the publication of her poems and short stories in Ukrainian journals. She also created enchanting poems and fairy tales for children, along with librettos for several children's operettas, with music composed by Mykola Lysenko. Her versatility extended to writing poetry in Russian and translating Swedish and Russian literature into Ukrainian, showcasing her linguistic prowess.

After raising their children, Vasylevska and her husband separated. She passed away in Hermanivka on March 13, 1927, at the age of sixty-five. Her legacy continued posthumously, with collections of her works published in 1929 and 1931, and her writings were later translated into English for the collection 'In the Dark of the Night' in 1998. In 2011, a commemorative coin featuring her image was released in Ukraine, celebrating the 150th anniversary of her birth as part of the 'Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine' series.
