Rivers showcased his talent on the collegiate stage with the Marquette Golden Eagles before being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the nineteen eighty-three NBA draft. He played as a point guard for the Hawks from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen ninety-one, later joining the ranks of the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs. After concluding his playing career in nineteen ninety-six, Rivers transitioned to broadcasting, calling NBA games for TNT.
