Domenico Alberti

Domenico Alberti, born in Venice in 1710, was a multifaceted musician known for his talents as a singer, harpsichordist, and composer. He honed his musical skills under the tutelage of Antonio Lotti, which laid the foundation for his future contributions to the world of music.

Alberti is best remembered for his keyboard sonatas, which showcase his innovative use of the Alberti bass—a technique characterized by arpeggiated accompaniment patterns. Although he was not the first to employ these patterns, his work significantly influenced the development of keyboard music during the classical era. His sonatas, typically consisting of two movements in binary form, number around thirty-six, with fourteen surviving to this day.

In his lifetime, Alberti gained recognition as a singer, often accompanying himself on the harpsichord. His talents caught the attention of the renowned castrato singer Farinelli during his time serving as a page for the Venetian ambassador to Spain in 1736. Despite being an amateur, Alberti's singing left a lasting impression.

While today he is regarded as a minor composer, the Alberti bass technique he popularized became a staple in the works of many later composers, including Mozart, who is believed to have modeled his early violin sonatas after Alberti's compositions. Although his works are infrequently performed, their impact on the evolution of keyboard music remains significant.
