Renowned for his operatic works, he composed over eighty operas, with his most celebrated piece being 'Il matrimonio segreto,' premiered in seventeen ninety-two. Cimarosa's operas predominantly featured comedic themes, showcasing his ability to blend humor with musicality.

While Cimarosa was primarily based in Naples, his career took him across various Italian cities, including Rome, Venice, and Florence, where he contributed to the vibrant opera scene. His talents were recognized beyond Italy, as he served as the court composer and conductor for Catherine the Great of Russia from seventeen eighty-seven to seventeen ninety-one, further solidifying his reputation in the world of classical music.

In his later years, Cimarosa returned to Naples, where he became embroiled in political turmoil, supporting the opposition against the monarchy. This involvement led to his imprisonment and subsequent exile, marking a tumultuous chapter in his life. Despite these challenges, he continued to create music until his death in Venice at the age of fifty-one.
