A native of Akwa Ibom State, Ekandem's journey in the clergy began after attending several Catholic seminaries. He was ordained as a priest on December seventh, nineteen forty-seven, becoming the first priest from the old Calabar province. His early ecclesiastical career included serving as the auxiliary bishop of Calabar from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen sixty-three.
In nineteen sixty-three, he was appointed Bishop of Ikot Ekpene, a role he held until nineteen eighty-one. During his tenure, he was elevated to cardinal in April nineteen seventy-six, further solidifying his influence within the Church. Following this, he became the Ecclesiastical Superior of Abuja, and when Abuja was elevated to an Archdiocese in nineteen eighty-nine, he took on the role of its first Archbishop.
