Dominick Argento

Dominick Argento, born on October twenty-seventh, nineteen twenty-seven, was a distinguished American composer renowned for his operatic and choral works. His notable compositions include the operas 'Postcard from Morocco,' 'Miss Havisham's Fire,' 'The Masque of Angels,' and 'The Aspern Papers.' Among his accolades, the song cycle 'From the Diary of Virginia Woolf' earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Music in nineteen seventy-five, highlighting his significant contributions to the field.

Argento spent a considerable part of his life in Minnesota, where he served as a university professor at the University of Minnesota. His teaching focused on music theory and composition, influencing a generation of musicians. In nineteen sixty-three, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Center Opera Company, which is now known as the Minnesota Opera, further solidifying his impact on the local arts scene.

Throughout the nineteen fifties, Argento divided his time between the United States and Italy, often working in Florence.
