Dominicus Gundissalinus

Dominicus Gundissalinus, also referred to as Domingo Gundisalvi or Gundisalvo, was a prominent philosopher and translator active in Toledo, Spain, during the twelfth century. Born around the year 1115, he played a pivotal role in the transmission of Arabic philosophical thought into Medieval Latin, significantly influencing the intellectual landscape of his time.

His notable translations include key works such as Avicenna's Liber de philosophia prima and De anima, as well as Ibn Gabirol's Fons vitae and al-Ghazali's Summa theoricae philosophiae. Gundissalinus collaborated with esteemed figures like the Jewish philosopher Abraham Ibn Daud and Johannes Hispanus, showcasing a remarkable intercultural exchange that enriched the philosophical discourse of the era.

As a philosopher, Gundissalinus was instrumental in the Latin assimilation of Arabic philosophy. He was among the first Latin thinkers to engage with and develop doctrines such as Avicenna's modal ontology and Ibn Gabirol's universal hylomorphism. His contributions laid the groundwork for the philosophical debates that would flourish in the thirteenth century, marking him as a key figure in the history of Western thought.
