In 1961, following the overthrow of the Rwandan monarchy amidst the Rwandan Revolution, Mbonyumutwa served as the interim first President of Rwanda. His leadership spanned a crucial nine-month transitional phase, guiding the country towards independence.

His tenure was marked by significant political changes, culminating in an election in October of the same year. Following this election, he was succeeded by Grégoire Kayibanda, who became the first elected president of Rwanda after the country gained independence.
