Domitien Ndayizeye

Domitien Ndayizeye, born on May second, nineteen fifty-three, is a prominent Burundian politician who held the office of the eighth president of Burundi from two thousand three to two thousand five. A member of the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU), he previously served as the first vice president under President Pierre Buyoya from two thousand one to two thousand three, showcasing his significant role in the country's political landscape.

In nineteen ninety-four, Ndayizeye was appointed as the director of the National Intelligence Service by President Cyprien Ntaryamira. His political career continued to evolve as he proposed a draft constitution to the parliament in two thousand four, which was intended for a referendum later that year. However, tensions with the Tutsi group led to a boycott of the legislative session, resulting in a postponement of the ballot.

Following his presidency, Ndayizeye became the head of the National Gathering for Change (Rassemblement National pour le Changement, RANAC). His political journey faced challenges, including his arrest on August twenty-first, two thousand six, in connection with an alleged coup plot. He denied the charges and was acquitted in January two thousand seven, along with several co-defendants.

In the two thousand ten general elections, Ndayizeye represented his party in the presidential race but ultimately withdrew alongside other opposition parties, citing concerns over electoral integrity. The political climate in Burundi remained tumultuous, particularly after the assassination of opposition politician Zedi Feruzi in two thousand fifteen, which led Ndayizeye and other opposition leaders to cease negotiations with the government.
