Don Newcombe

Donald Newcombe, affectionately known as "Newk," was a trailblazing American professional baseball pitcher born on June 14, 1926. His remarkable career spanned ten non-consecutive seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), beginning in the Negro National League and concluding in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Newcombe's journey through the world of baseball is marked by significant achievements that paved the way for future generations of players.

In a historic first, Newcombe became the first pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Cy Young Awards during his illustrious career. This remarkable feat would not be replicated until 2011, when Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers accomplished the same. In 1949, he made history again as the first black pitcher to start a World Series game, showcasing his talent on one of baseball's biggest stages.
