Donald Blessing

Donald F. "Don" Blessing, born on December 26, 1905, in Hollister, California, was a distinguished American coxswain who made his mark in the world of rowing. He attended Visalia Union High School before rising to prominence as the coxswain for the American rowing team at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, where he led his crew to a gold medal victory in the eights. His leadership and skill earned him the title of Most Valuable Man, as voted by his teammates from the University of California.

Throughout his life, Don remained a proud Californian, spending most of his adult years in Piedmont and Belvedere. He was married to Nola Dillon Blessing, who passed away in February 1985. Together, they were dedicated supporters of their alma mater, with Don being a charter member of the San Francisco Grid Club and one of the first inductees into the University of California Hall of Fame. His entire 1928 Cal Crew was honored with induction in 1986, celebrating their remarkable achievement as part of a university that would go on to win three Olympic gold medals for the United States.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Blessing was also involved in professional sports as one of the minority owners of the Oakland Señores football club, which later became known as the Oakland Raiders. This venture made him an indirect founding owner in the American Football League in 1960. However, he and his fellow owners sold their stakes to F. Wayne Valley before the inaugural season commenced.

Don Blessing was a family man, having two children, Sherrell and Don Jr., both of whom have since passed away. He also cherished his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond his athletic and professional achievements.
