Đorđe Balašević

Đorđe Balašević, born on May eleventh, nineteen fifty-three, was a multifaceted Serbian artist whose talents spanned singing, songwriting, poetry, and film direction. He began his musical journey in the late nineteen seventies as a member of the band Rani Mraz, where he quickly made a name for himself with the hit song 'Računajte na nas' (Count on Us), a piece that resonated deeply with a generation and is often regarded as an anthem of its time.

As his career progressed, Balašević transitioned to a successful solo career, marked by his vivid lyricism and poetic storytelling. His songs often contained political commentary, reflecting his evolving views on South Slavic unity and later, his criticism of the authorities leading up to the Yugoslav wars. During this tumultuous period, he emerged as a prominent anti-war voice, earning recognition as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

Balašević's courage to speak out against the regime of Slobodan Milošević placed him at considerable personal risk, yet he remained steadfast in his beliefs. He was notably the first Serbian artist to perform in Sarajevo following the city's siege, a testament to his commitment to peace and unity. Over his prolific career, he recorded fourteen albums and authored eight books, solidifying his status as a musical legend and the creator of numerous evergreen hits.
