Dorothea of Caesarea

Dorothea of Caesarea, a revered figure of the early Christian church, is celebrated as a virgin martyr who met her fate in the fourth century at Caesarea Mazaca. Her story, though shrouded in mystery, is emblematic of the trials faced by early Christians during a time of intense persecution.

Despite the scant evidence surrounding her life and martyrdom, Dorothea is recognized in the Roman Martyrology alongside her companion, Theophilus. Their shared legacy as martyrs of Caesarea in Cappadocia is commemorated annually on February sixth, a testament to their enduring impact on Christian tradition.

Although her feast day was removed from the General Roman Calendar by Pope Paul VI due to a lack of universal significance, Dorothea's memory continues to be honored in various regional calendars and the Tridentine Calendar. This reflects the lasting devotion to her story among certain communities.
