Dorothy Reed Mendenhall

Dorothy Reed Mendenhall, born on September 22, 1874, was a trailblazing physician and scientist renowned for her contributions to pediatric medicine and cellular pathology. As one of the first women to graduate from the prestigious Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, she broke barriers in a field dominated by men during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1901, Mendenhall made a groundbreaking discovery that would change the understanding of Hodgkin's disease. Through her meticulous observations, she identified the Reed–Sternberg cell, a unique cellular marker that demonstrated that Hodgkin's disease was not a form of tuberculosis, as previously thought.
