Dorothy Ripley

Dorothy Ripley, born in 1767, was a remarkable British evangelist and writer whose influence spanned both the United States and Britain. In 1801, she embarked on a transformative journey to America, where she dedicated her life to ministry and advocacy for the marginalized. Raised in the Methodist tradition, she later embraced Quaker beliefs, which shaped her compassionate approach to evangelism.

Throughout her life, Ripley traveled thousands of miles, becoming a prominent figure on the camp meeting circuit. Her tireless efforts brought her into contact with diverse communities, including the Oneida people, incarcerated individuals, and African slaves in the Southern United States. Her commitment to these disenfranchised groups highlighted her dedication to social justice and spiritual upliftment.

In addition to her evangelistic work, Ripley was a prolific writer, self-publishing six books, three of which were successful enough to warrant a second printing. Her literary contributions complemented her ministry, allowing her to reach a wider audience and share her insights on faith and social issues.

Ripley's adventurous spirit led her to cross the Atlantic Ocean at least nine times, often traveling alone, which was a remarkable feat for a woman of her time. Upon her passing in 1831 in Virginia, a newspaper obituary celebrated her as 'perhaps the most extraordinary woman in the world,' a testament to her indelible impact on those she served.
