After completing his bachelor's degree in university studies at North Dakota State University in 1978, Burgum pursued an MBA from Stanford University, graduating in 1980. Under his leadership, the company went public in 1997 and was sold to Microsoft for one point one billion dollars in 2001, after which he managed Microsoft Business Solutions.
In addition to his work at Microsoft, Burgum has held significant positions in various organizations, including serving as board chairman for Atlassian and SuccessFactors. He is also the founder of Kilbourne Group, a real estate development firm based in Fargo, and co-founder of Arthur Ventures, a software venture capital group.
Burgum's political career began with a landslide victory in the 2016 North Dakota gubernatorial election, followed by a successful reelection in 2020. In June 2023, he launched his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination but ended his candidacy in December 2023, subsequently advising on the Trump campaign's energy policy. His nomination as Secretary of the Interior was announced on November 14, 2024, and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate shortly thereafter.
As Secretary of the Interior, Burgum has been at the forefront of significant policy decisions, overseeing the Trump administration's initiatives on energy, including a crackdown on wind power and the promotion of coal-fired power, as well as expanded drilling and metals extraction on federal lands.
