During the 2013-2014 season, McDermott led the nation in scoring, earning him recognition as a three-time consensus first-team All-American. His stellar performance culminated in being named the consensus national player of the year in his senior year, and he concluded his college career with an impressive total of the fifth-most points in NCAA Division I men's basketball history.

After his successful college tenure, McDermott was selected as the eleventh overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets.
