Douglas Tompkins

Douglas Tompkins, born on March twentieth, nineteen forty-three, was a prominent American entrepreneur and environmentalist whose legacy extends far beyond the business world. He co-founded The North Face, a leading outdoor equipment and clothing company, alongside his first wife, Susie Tompkins Buell, in the mid-1960s. Together, they also established the Esprit clothing brand, which became synonymous with quality and style.

After his divorce and a successful career in business, Tompkins shifted his focus entirely to environmental conservation in nineteen eighty-nine. He dedicated his life to protecting the natural world, becoming a key figure in various environmental organizations, including the Foundation for Deep Ecology and Tompkins Conservation. His commitment to land conservation was unparalleled, as he and his second wife, Kris McDivitt Tompkins, acquired and preserved over two million acres of wilderness in Chile, making them among the largest private landowners in the region.

The Tompkinses were not only focused on land preservation but also on creating parks, recovering wildlife, and promoting ecological agriculture. Their efforts culminated in the largest private land donation to any South American government, a testament to their dedication to biodiversity and environmental activism. In recognition of his significant contributions, Douglas Tompkins was posthumously naturalized as a Chilean citizen, solidifying his legacy as a champion of the environment.
