Doukas

The House of Doukas, known in Greek as Δούκας and Latinized as Ducas, was a prominent Byzantine Greek noble family that played a significant role in the Byzantine Empire from the ninth to the eleventh centuries. This illustrious lineage produced several notable generals and rulers, contributing to the empire's military and political landscape during a critical period of its history.

Among the various branches of the Doukas family, the Komnenodoukai emerged as a maternally-descended line that founded the Despotate of Epirus in the thirteenth century. Another branch of the family established its rule over Thessaly, further extending the influence of the Doukas name across the region.

Despite the family's prominence, the continuity of descent among the different branches of the Doukas is somewhat ambiguous. Historians have identified several distinct groups within the Doukai, as evidenced by their appearances in contemporary sources. Polemis, who compiled a comprehensive overview of the Doukas bearers, cautioned against viewing these groups as a single, cohesive family due to the lack of clear genealogical connections.
