Barret Eugene Hansen, born on April 2, 1941, is widely recognized as Dr. Demento, a pioneering figure in the realm of novelty music and comedy. His journey began in 1970 at KPPC-FM in Pasadena, California, where he crafted the Dr. Demento persona. This unique character emerged after Hansen played the quirky track 'Transfusion' by Nervous Norvus, prompting DJ 'The Obscene' Steven Clean to quip that Hansen must be 'demented' to air such a song. This playful remark inspired the creation of a mythical character that would become synonymous with Hansen's innovative approach to radio.

Dr. Demento's weekly show, which first went into syndication in 1974, became a cultural phenomenon, reaching audiences through the Westwood One Radio Network from 1978 until 1992. Although the broadcast syndication concluded on June 6, 2010, Hansen continued to share his passion for novelty music online until his retirement in October 2025, captivating listeners with his eclectic mix of unusual recordings.

With a master's degree in ethnomusicology, Hansen's expertise extends beyond novelty songs. He has contributed to various magazines and provided liner notes for artists across different genres.
