Dragutin Dimitrijević

Dragutin Dimitrijević, known by his nickname Apis, was born on 17 August 1876. He rose to prominence as a Serbian army officer and became the principal leader of the Black Hand, a secret society committed to South Slav irredentism. This organization played a pivotal role in the 1903 coup that resulted in the assassination of King Alexander I of Serbia and Queen Draga, marking a significant turning point in Serbian history.

Apis's influence extended beyond domestic politics; he is widely believed to have orchestrated the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914. This act was a catalyst for the July Crisis, which ultimately led to the outbreak of World War I, showcasing the far-reaching implications of his actions.

In 1916, the Serbian government in exile, led by Prime Minister Nikola Pašić, viewed Dimitrijević's unwavering stance on South Slav irredentism as a threat to ongoing peace negotiations with Vienna. Consequently, charges of high treason were filed against him and the leadership of the Unification or Death organization. He was subsequently tried in Thessaloniki by a Serbian Army court martial.

On 26 June 1917, Dragutin Dimitrijević was found guilty of conspiring to assassinate both the Archduke and Prince Regent Alexander Karađorđević. He faced execution by firing squad, along with two of his senior associates, marking a tragic end to a controversial figure whose actions significantly shaped the course of Serbian and European history.
