Dražen Petrović, born on October 22, 1964, was a legendary Yugoslav and Croatian basketball player who made a significant impact on the sport both in Europe and the NBA. He began his professional career in the 1980s, achieving remarkable success with Cibona and Real Madrid, where he showcased his exceptional skills as a shooting guard.
Petrović's international career was equally illustrious, earning him two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992, along with a bronze in 1984. He also claimed a gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in 1990 and a bronze in 1986, as well as a gold and bronze at the FIBA EuroBasket in 1989 and 1987, respectively. His accolades include being named the FIBA World Championship MVP in 1986 and the FIBA EuroBasket MVP in 1989.
In 1989, seeking greater challenges, Petrović joined the NBA as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. After a brief stint, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he flourished as a starter and became one of the league's premier shooting guards. His contributions to the game were recognized when he was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991.
Tragically, Petrović's life was cut short on June 7, 1993, when he died in a car accident in Germany at the age of twenty-eight. His legacy endures, with the Nets retiring his jersey number three and the establishment of the Dražen Petrović Basketball Hall in his honor. He was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007, solidifying his status as a national hero in Croatia and a pioneer for European players in the NBA.
