Du Yuesheng, born on August twenty-second, eighteen eighty-eight, was a prominent figure in Shanghai's underworld, known for his significant influence as a mob boss. Nicknamed 'Big-Eared Du', he initially amassed his wealth through the opium trade, which laid the foundation for his later ventures into finance.
Throughout his life, Du was not only a businessman but also a politician who played a crucial role in supporting Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang during their struggles against both the Communists and the Japanese forces. His political affiliations and financial prowess made him a key player in the tumultuous landscape of early twentieth-century China.
As the political climate shifted in April nineteen forty-nine, Du foresaw the impending fall of Shanghai and made the strategic decision to relocate to Hong Kong. There, he continued to navigate the complexities of his life until his passing on August sixteenth, nineteen fifty-one.
