Dudley Garrett

Dudley Garrett, born on July twenty-fourth, nineteen twenty-four, was a promising Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. His career, though brief, showcased his potential as a steady player during the nineteen forty-two to forty-three season, where he made an impressive appearance in twenty-three games with the New York Rangers.

Garrett's journey in the sport was tragically interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. In a courageous act of service, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, dedicating himself to his country during a tumultuous time. Unfortunately, his ship was torpedoed by the German submarine U-1228, leading to a rapid sinking that claimed the lives of all ninety crew members on board.

In recognition of his sacrifice and the bright future that was cut short, the American Hockey League established the Dudley 'Red' Garrett Memorial Award in nineteen forty-seven. This prestigious award is presented annually to the league's most outstanding rookie, ensuring that Garrett's legacy endures in the sport he cherished.
