Duje Bonačić

Duje Bonačić, born on April 10, 1929, in Split, was a distinguished Croatian rower who made his mark in the world of sports by winning a gold medal in the coxless four event at the 1952 Summer Olympics, representing Yugoslavia.

Growing up in a multicultural family with an ethnic Croat father and an ethnic Slovene mother, Bonačić was the youngest of three siblings, with an elder brother named Vojko and a sister named Nevenka. His early life was marked by a passion for natural sciences, which he pursued academically in Zagreb.

At the time of his athletic career, Bonačić stood at a height of one hundred eighty-three centimeters and weighed only fifty-six kilograms. He took up rowing primarily to build muscle strength. After retiring from competitive rowing, he transitioned into academia, becoming a professor of geography, meteorology, and oceanography at maritime schools. He also contributed to the sport as a coach and referee in both rowing and sailing.

Following the passing of fellow athlete Željko Čajkovski on November 11, 2016, Bonačić earned the distinction of being the oldest Croatian Olympic medal winner. His life came to a close on January 24, 2020, at the age of ninety, after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy in both sports and education.
