Dumitru Brătianu

Dumitru C. Brătianu, born in 1818 in Pitești, was a prominent Romanian politician and diplomat. He was the son of stolnic Dincă Brătianu and Anastasia Brătianu (née Tigveanu), and the elder brother of Ion C. Brătianu. His academic journey took him to Paris, where he completed his baccalauréat in 1835 and later pursued law at the University of Paris, earning his degree in 1841.

In April 1848, Brătianu returned to Romania to take part in the Wallachian Revolution. However, following the suppression of the uprising, he was forced into exile, only making his way back to Wallachia in July 1857. His political career saw him serve as the Prime Minister of Romania and Minister of Foreign Affairs for a brief period in 1881.

As the mayor of Bucharest, Brătianu played a significant role during a pivotal moment in Romanian history—the arrival of King Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, the first king of Romania. He welcomed the king near the Băneasa Forest, delivering a stirring speech to an audience of over thirty thousand people.

Brătianu was also an active member of the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, contributing to the cultural and political landscape of Romania during his lifetime. His legacy continues to be remembered in the annals of Romanian history.
