Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Dương Văn Minh

Dương Văn Minh, born on February 16, 1916, in Tiền Giang province, Vietnam, emerged as a significant political figure during a tumultuous period in the country's history. His early life was marked by military service; he joined the French Army at the onset of World War II and faced capture and torture by the Imperial Japanese. After his release, he aligned with the French-backed Vietnamese National Army, where he gained prominence by defeating the Bình Xuyên crime syndicate and dismantling the Hòa Hảo religious army, earning the favor of Prime Minister Ngô Đình Diệm.

In 1963, as Diệm's popularity waned amid the Buddhist crisis, Minh led a coup that resulted in the assassination of Diệm. However, his tenure as the head of a military junta was short-lived, lasting only three months before he was ousted by General Nguyễn Khánh. Despite being a token leader during this period, Minh's leadership was criticized for its ineffectiveness, and he was eventually exiled after a power struggle.

Minh returned to Vietnam in 1972, advocating for a 'third force' approach to reunification, which was at odds with the prevailing views of the government. In April 1975, as South Vietnam faced imminent collapse, he was appointed president just days before the fall of Saigon. On April 30, he ordered a surrender to prevent further devastation, marking the end of an era for South Vietnam.

After the war, Minh was spared the harsh treatment faced by many of his contemporaries and lived a quiet life until he emigrated to France in 1983. He later settled in California, where he passed away, leaving behind a complex legacy as a leader who navigated the turbulent waters of Vietnam's political landscape.
