Đurđica Bjedov

Đurđica Bjedov, born on April fifth, nineteen forty-seven, is a distinguished retired Croatian swimmer, celebrated as the only Yugoslav Olympic champion in swimming. Her remarkable career reached its pinnacle at the nineteen sixty-eight Olympics, where she not only clinched the gold medal in the one hundred meter breaststroke, breaking the Olympic record, but also secured a silver medal in the two hundred meter breaststroke.

Despite her success, Bjedov faced a setback when her medley relay team was disqualified in the preliminaries due to an early jump into the water. Nevertheless, her outstanding performance that year earned her the prestigious title of Yugoslav Athlete of the Year, highlighting her significant contributions to the sport.

After retiring from competitive swimming, Bjedov transitioned into coaching, dedicating her efforts to nurturing the next generation of swimmers. Among her most notable achievements is raising her daughter, Anamarija Petričević, who also became an Olympic swimmer, continuing the family legacy in the sport.

Today, Đurđica Bjedov resides in Locarno, Switzerland, where she remains a prominent figure in the swimming community. Her legacy is further cemented by her induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, a testament to her exceptional talent and influence in the world of swimming.
