Eanred of Northumbria

Eanred of Northumbria, a sovereign in the early ninth century, remains a somewhat enigmatic figure in Anglo-Saxon history. His reign, which is believed to have spanned from eight hundred ten to eight hundred forty, is marked by significant political turbulence and the eventual decline of the Anglian monarchy in Northumbria shortly after his death.

Born to King Eardwulf, who faced deposition by the little-known Ælfwald in eight hundred six, Eanred's ascent to the throne is shrouded in uncertainty. While the History of the Church of Durham suggests a brief rule by Ælfwald before Eanred's succession, Frankish accounts indicate a more complex narrative involving Eardwulf's restoration with the aid of Charlemagne and the pope.

During Eanred's reign, the styca emerged as a new form of currency, replacing the earlier sceat. These small coins, produced in York, were of low silver content and later transitioned to brass. The sheer volume of stycas in circulation, estimated in the hundreds of thousands, indicates their primary role in external trade rather than everyday transactions among the Northumbrian populace.

Despite the limited information available, Eanred's significance is underscored by the historical context of his rule. His legacy continued through his son, Æthelred, who succeeded him, marking a pivotal moment in the shifting dynamics of Northumbrian leadership.
