His first attempt came in 1977 against the legendary Muhammad Ali, where he lost by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. In 1979, he faced Larry Holmes, succumbing to a technical knockout in the eleventh round. Notably, Shavers managed to hurt Ali in the second round and knocked down Holmes in the seventh, showcasing his formidable skills.
