Earnie Shavers

Earnie Dee Shaver, born on August 31, 1944, was an iconic American professional boxer whose career spanned from 1969 to 1995. Renowned for his incredible punching power, Shavers is celebrated as one of the hardest hitters in heavyweight boxing history, boasting an impressive seventy knockout victories, including twenty-three in the first round, which translates to a remarkable overall knockout rate of seventy-six point nine percent.

Throughout his career, Shavers faced the elite of the heavyweight division, challenging for the world heavyweight championship on two occasions. His first attempt came in 1977 against the legendary Muhammad Ali, where he lost by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. In 1979, he faced Larry Holmes, succumbing to a technical knockout in the eleventh round. Notably, Shavers managed to hurt Ali in the second round and knocked down Holmes in the seventh, showcasing his formidable skills.

In addition to his championship bouts, Shavers achieved victories over several former world champions, including Vicente Rondón, Jimmy Ellis, and Ken Norton. He also triumphed over three-time European heavyweight champion Joe Bugner and top contender Jimmy Young, solidifying his reputation in the boxing world.

After retiring from the ring, Shavers remained a prominent figure in boxing, attending events as a special guest, signing autographs, and inspiring others as a motivational speaker.
