Echestratus, a prominent figure in ancient Sparta, reigned as king from approximately nine hundred to eight hundred seventy BC. He was born into the esteemed Agiad dynasty, being the son of King Agis I and the third ruler in this illustrious line of Spartan kings.
During his reign, Echestratus played a pivotal role in expanding Sparta's influence, notably securing control over the strategically significant district of Cynuria, located on the Argive border. This territorial gain not only enhanced Sparta's power but also solidified its position in the region.
As a father, Echestratus was the progenitor of Labotas, also known as Leobotes, who would later ascend to the throne of Sparta. His lineage continued through his grandson, Doryssus, ensuring the legacy of the Agiad line endured through generations.
