Ed Stelmach

Ed Stelmach, born on May eleventh, nineteen fifty-one, is a notable Canadian politician and farmer who served as the thirteenth premier of Alberta from two thousand six to two thousand eleven. Raised on a farm near Lamont, he is the grandson of Ukrainian immigrants and speaks the distinctive Canadian dialect of Ukrainian fluently. His early life was dedicated to farming, with a brief period spent studying at the University of Alberta.

Stelmach's political journey began in nineteen eighty-six when he was elected to the Lamont County council during a municipal election. A year later, he was appointed reeve, a position he held until he transitioned to provincial politics. In the nineteen ninety-three provincial election, he became the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vegreville-Viking, later known as Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, representing the Progressive Conservative party.

During his tenure in Ralph Klein's cabinet, Stelmach held various portfolios, including Intergovernmental Relations, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Agriculture, Food, and Rural Development. Known for his low-key approach, he emerged as a candidate for party leadership following Klein's resignation in two thousand six, ultimately securing an unexpected victory on the second ballot.

As premier, Stelmach focused on managing Alberta's oil reserves, particularly the Athabasca Oil Sands, and resisted environmentalist calls to slow development. His administration also initiated significant reforms in health governance, amended the Alberta human rights code, and reintroduced all-party committees to the Legislature. Despite facing criticism for a thirty percent pay increase shortly after re-election, he successfully expanded the Progressive Conservatives' majority in the two thousand eight election.

Stelmach's premiership was challenged by the late-2000s recession, leading to Alberta's first budget deficit in sixteen years. He stepped down as premier on October seventh, two thousand eleven, and joined the board of Covenant Health a year later, becoming its chair in January two thousand sixteen.
