Edgar Ætheling

Edgar Ætheling, the last male descendant of the royal house of Cerdic of Wessex, holds a unique place in English history. In the tumultuous year of 1066, he was elected King of England by the Witan, yet he never received the crown that was rightfully his. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a life filled with challenges and upheaval.

Following his election, Edgar faced the harsh realities of exile and conflict against the invading Normans. His journey took him far from his homeland, leading him to Norman Apulia, in present-day Italy. It is believed that during this time, he may have participated in the First Crusade or at least made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem after its conquest, seeking spiritual solace amid the chaos of his life.

In the later years of his life, Edgar found himself embroiled in the complex dynastic struggles of the Normans. Despite the turmoil surrounding him, he eventually chose to retreat from the political arena, opting for a quieter existence in the countryside.
