Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas, born on July nineteenth, eighteen thirty-four, was a prominent French artist renowned for his exceptional contributions to the world of Impressionism. Although he is often associated with this movement, Degas preferred to identify as a realist, diverging from the outdoor painting style favored by many of his contemporaries. His artistic repertoire included not only pastel drawings and oil paintings but also bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings.

Degas is particularly celebrated for his captivating depictions of dance, with more than half of his works featuring dancers. His mastery in capturing movement is evident in his portrayals of ballet dancers and bathing female nudes, showcasing his superb skills as a draftsman. Beyond dance, he explored themes of racehorses, racing jockeys, and complex portraits that delve into the psychological nuances of human isolation.

Initially aspiring to be a history painter, Degas underwent a significant transformation in his early thirties.
