Edgar Wallace

Edgar Wallace, born on April 1, 1875, emerged from the depths of poverty as an illegitimate child in London. Leaving school at the tender age of twelve, he faced life's challenges head-on. At twenty-one, he joined the army and served as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War, contributing to notable publications like Reuters and the Daily Mail.

Upon returning to London, burdened by debt, Wallace turned to writing thrillers to secure his financial future. His first major success came with the publication of The Four Just Men in nineteen oh five. Drawing inspiration from his experiences as a reporter in the Congo, he penned serialized short stories for magazines, later compiling them into collections such as Sanders of the River in nineteen eleven.

In nineteen twenty-one, Wallace signed with Hodder & Stoughton, solidifying his status as an internationally recognized author. Despite a failed attempt to enter politics as a Liberal MP for Blackpool in the nineteen thirty-one general election, he transitioned to Hollywood, where he contributed as a scriptwriter for RKO. Tragically, he passed away suddenly from undiagnosed diabetes while working on the initial drafts of King Kong in nineteen thirty-three.

Wallace's prolific output was staggering; one of his publishers claimed that a quarter of all books in England were penned by him. His diverse body of work includes screenplays, poetry, historical non-fiction, eighteen stage plays, nine hundred fifty-seven short stories, and over one hundred seventy novels, with twelve published in nineteen twenty-nine alone. His legacy endures, with more than one hundred sixty films adapted from his writings.

Remembered for his contributions to the genre of crime and adventure fiction, Wallace is particularly noted for the J. G. Reeder detective stories and the Green Archer serial. He sold over fifty million copies of his works, and despite many of his books being out of print in the UK, they remain popular in Germany, where around fifty titles are still available. In nineteen ninety-seven, The Economist hailed him as one of the most prolific thriller writers of the twentieth century, and a German TV documentary titled The Edgar Wallace Story was produced in nineteen sixty-three, featuring his son, Bryan Edgar Wallace.
