Edgars Rinkēvičs, born on September twenty-first, nineteen seventy-three, is a prominent Latvian politician and diplomat who has made significant contributions to his country's political landscape. He has been serving as the eleventh and current president of Latvia since July twenty-twenty-three, marking a historic moment as he became the first openly gay head of state in a European Union country.
Before ascending to the presidency, Rinkēvičs held the position of minister of foreign affairs from two thousand eleven to two thousand twenty-three. His extensive experience in government also includes roles as the head of the Chancery of the President of Latvia, state secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and a deputy in the Saeima, Latvia's parliament.
Rinkēvičs has been an active member of various political parties, including Latvian Way, the Reform Party, and the Unity party, which he represented from May two thousand fourteen until his election as president. Following his election, he adhered to the customary practice in Latvia of maintaining political neutrality, leading him to leave the Unity party.
