Edna Adan Ismail

Edna Adan Ismail, born on September eighth, nineteen thirty-seven, is a distinguished nurse midwife, politician, and activist. She made history as the first female Foreign Minister of Somaliland, serving from two thousand three to two thousand six. Her contributions to healthcare and women's rights have been profound, particularly through her role as the founder and director of the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa.

As a passionate advocate against female genital mutilation, Edna has dedicated her life to the abolition of this practice, positioning herself as a pioneer in the struggle for women's rights in Somaliland. Her commitment to social justice extends to her role as President of the Organization for Victims of Torture, where she works tirelessly to support those affected by violence and oppression.

In March two thousand twenty-two, Edna was elected president of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization, further solidifying her influence on the global stage. Throughout her life, she has been married three times, including to Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal, who served as the prime minister of the State of Somaliland.
