Edvard Westermarck

Edvard Westermarck, born on November twentieth, eighteen sixty-two, was a distinguished Finnish social anthropologist, sociologist, and philosopher. He emerged as the most internationally recognized Finnish scholar of his era, making significant contributions to the understanding of marriage and the origins of moral ideas.

Westermarck was a pioneer in the field of sociology, being the first to deliver lectures on the subject in both England and the Nordic countries. His academic career included prestigious professorships at the London School of Economics, the University of Helsinki, and Åbo Akademi University, where he notably served as the inaugural rector.

Among his many contributions, the Westermarck effect stands out, positing that children raised in close proximity develop a natural aversion to sexual relations with one another. His scholarly pursuits in human sexuality and marriage have led some biographers to speculate about his own presumed homosexuality.

In the United Kingdom, he is often referred to as Edward. His sister, Helena Westermarck, was also a notable figure, recognized for her work as a writer and artist.
