Edward C. Stone

Edward Carroll Stone Jr. was a prominent American space physicist, born on January 23, 1936. He dedicated his life to the exploration of the cosmos, serving as a professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology and as the director of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1991 to 2001. His most notable achievement was his role as the project scientist for the Voyager program, which launched two spacecraft that ventured into the outer Solar System and ultimately became the first to enter interstellar space.

Stone's leadership of the Voyager mission spanned an impressive fifty years, from its inception in 1972 until his retirement in 2022. Under his guidance, the mission achieved remarkable milestones, including encounters with Jupiter in 1979, Saturn from 1980 to 1981, Uranus in 1986, and Neptune in 1989.
