Edward Calvin Kendall

Edward Calvin Kendall, born on March eighth, eighteen eighty-six, was a prominent American chemist and biochemist renowned for his groundbreaking research in the field of endocrinology. His most notable achievement came in nineteen fifty when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, sharing this prestigious honor with Swiss chemist Tadeusz Reichstein and Mayo Clinic physician Philip S. Hench. Their collective work focused on the hormones of the adrenal glands, a significant contribution to medical science.

In addition to his research on adrenal hormones, Kendall made significant strides in the study of the thyroid gland by isolating thyroxine, a crucial hormone. He was also part of the pioneering team that successfully crystallized glutathione and elucidated its chemical structure, further cementing his legacy in biochemistry.

At the time of receiving the Nobel Prize, Kendall was affiliated with the Graduate School of the Mayo Foundation, where he dedicated much of his career to advancing the understanding of biochemical processes. Following his retirement from the Mayo Foundation, he joined the faculty at Princeton University, where he continued to inspire and educate until his passing in nineteen seventy-two.

In recognition of his contributions to science and education, Kendall Elementary School in Norwalk bears his name, ensuring that his legacy endures in the community.
